All the worlds series (2009-10)
All the worlds is a series of 3D sculptural collages. The sculptures draw inspiration from model-making for theatre, childhood dollhouses and the perspective play in Holbein’s 1533 painting ‘The Ambassadors’. These elements are woven into 3D collage ‘sets’ or ‘worlds’, in which the constituent parts cover and uncover hidden fragments as the audience moves around the work. These worlds within worlds point to both the seen and unseen. I have become increasingly interested in the issue of public and/or private space; and notions of consumption, privacy, vulnerability and exploitation particularly on the internet. This line of enquiry has led me to examining the idea of mask-wearing as a survival strategy, reversing power structures where suddenly the viewer is more exposed than the subject.
